Polkerris

Polkerris is a small picturesque village on the south coast of Cornwall, near Fowey. There is a single steep road leading down to the harbour and small sandy beach. The village is part of the Rashleigh Estate, hence the name of the pub, the Rashleigh Inn. It is very popular with holidaymakers with its setting on the south-west facing beach, overlooking St. Austell Bay. It is situated in a 300 year old former coastguard station and was the setting for the 1972 film “Doomwatch”.

Also on the beach is the renowned restaurant, Sams on the Beach. This is housed in the Old Lifeboat Station. This was Fowey’s lifeboat station from 1859 until 1922, when Fowey acquired a replacement in the town.

Mike Kerris, a highly respected artist, was born and raised in Cornwall. He is known as Kerris and regarded by collectors of his work as the “Cornish Constable”. He has a cottage studio in Polkerris at number 7.
